These postgraduate course templates are to be used when you are writing and/or rewriting your course notes. They ensure all our postgraduate courses meet the requirements as set out in the UNSW Template for Course Handouts as distributed by the Committee on Education. They also ensure consistency in the
format of all course notes across the School.
We have included some tips on how to write your course outline and sections in the templates. This material has been taken in part from another document developed by the school's Professional Education Group, 'How to Develop a Course - Resource' which is available in hardcopy format - see Sophie di Corpo or Peter Harris if you'd like a copy.
For the assessment part of the outline you will need the Grades Calculator Spreadsheet.
The two templates for you to use are the Course Outline Template and the Sections Template. Please note the templates are colour coded and need to be viewed either electronically or printed out in colour. Contact Christine Rousselis for a colour copy.
Course Outline Template
The Course Outline Template is designed to serve two main purposes:
- Provide you with an outline of what needs to be included in your course outlines - this appears in BLACK text - which is already formatted - so you can use it as it is. In some instances you will need to fill in the blanks or type over existing text - you need not worry about formatting the text yourself when you do this.
- Give you some guidance as to how to write the different components of the outline - guidance appears in RED and examples from other courses appears in BLUE.
Sections Template
The Sections Template also provides you with the format you need so it is a matter of filling in the blanks. We have chosen to use the term Section, replacing module, chapter, unit and so on for consistency. You will also notice how we have numbered each section - 1.2, 2.2 etc. and that this numbering system applies to all readings, activities and page numbering.
Grades Calculator Spreadsheet
The Grades Calculator spreadsheet is to be used in conjunction with the grading system as described in the Course Outline Template.
Optima Font
Note: You will need to have Optima font on your computer for the documents to be viewed and printed correctly. To download a copy of Optima click on the UNSW website above.
Formatting Instructions
We have also included more detailed information on the formatting for those of you who would like to use this.
