Increased attention has been directed to conflict, peace and development in recent years.
The particular roles of humanitarian relief and development cooperation in responding to conflict have attracted attention and reflection.
These initiatives have highlighted the need to explore how sectors such as health can contribute to conflict prevention, peace-building and improving effectiveness and coherence of programmes during and after complex political emergencies.
The UNSW School of Public Health and Community Medicine has a strong commitment to the promotion of health and human rights. In collaboration with colleagues from a number of research centres and other faculties at the University of New South Wales, the School has initiated a program of research to examine policies and practice at the intersection of health systems, conflict prevention, post-conflict recovery and peace-building. Work under the Health and Conflict Project also involves collaboration and exchange with colleagues from across the world in an effort to promote reflection, learning, and analysis in this area.
Our first major research project, the
Australia-Canada Consortium on Health and Conflict: Preventing violence, recovery and building the peace, has been supported by
AusAID with the goal of improving and enhancing development policy and practice in the Asia-Pacific.
A number of other initiatives have stemmed from the first phase of this project.
