    "The purpose of this report is to give people working within health care, municipalities and voluntary organisation, as well as others who might be interested, an up-to-date account of the health status of children and adolescents and of useful methods for preventing ill-health and promoting health among children and adolescents in Stockholm county."
  • Financing health promotion
    “…Health promotion is a complex, multi-sector activity. Within the health system, it is organized vertically in the form of public health campaigns or integrated in other health care interactions. Furthermore, health promotion can be encouraged on the health care market, for example through the introduction of financial incentives. This paper advocates for health promotion in any form as a necessary intervention for improving and maintaining population health. It is considered equally relevant for developed and developing countries, although different countries may want to employ different strategies. While still under-funded in many high-income countries the lack of funding for health promotion is generally most notorious in middle and low-income countries. In many of the latter groups, health promotion is also not included in health system financing arrangements. This [2007] paper explores how health promotion can be integrated in health system financing schemes. The analysis departs from the health systems financing framework and is based on the health financing functions: revenue collection, pooling and purchasing. Examples from different countries are presented to illustrate a number of innovative financing options for health promotion…”.

    The guide aims to provide people a practical understanding of HIA, its process, concepts and theories. “…Health Impact Assessment HIA is both a health protection and health promotion tool. In Health Impact Assessment HIA, health should be broadly defined to include assessments of both health hazards and health benefits of a proposal and the potential ways in which health and well-being can be both protected and promoted….”
  • Polio Vaccines difficult to swallow: The story of a controversy in Northern Nigeria
    This paper by Maryam Yahya of the Institute of Development Studies examines the Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV) controversy in Nigeria, where rumours that the vaccine was part of a Western tool to sterilise Muslims prompted a boycott of the vaccine by Muslim leaders. The paper examines the roles, responsibilities and actions of global and national actors in implementing effective immunisation campaigns, including the manner in which health care issues are prioritised, managed, and financed. The author identifies sustained communication as the centrepiece of a successful immunisation campaign, something which is often neglected in immunisation budgets.

    "This paper provides an overview of the role radio broadcasting can play in promoting better health for poor people. It has been conceptualised within the context of global efforts to reduce the burden of disease and ill health on poor people and advocates a people-centred and rights-based approach to health."
  • What is the evidence on school health promotion in improving or preventing disease and, specifically what is the effectiveness of the health promoting schools approach?
    "This is a Health Evidence Network (HEN) synthesis report by Stewart-Brown seeking to determine the effectiveness of health promotion in schools and, more specifically, the effectiveness of the “health promoting schools” approach....The report shows that effectiveness of different types of programmes varies. School-based programmes that promote mental health, healthy eating and physical activity are amongst the most effective, while programmes on preventing substance use, and suicide are among the least effective of school health promotion programmes."

  • Youth Peer Education Toolkit: Standards for Peer Education Programmes
    This publication is a tool for managers to use to monitor and improve their program activities. Developed during a consultative meeting with peer educators, trainers, project managers, and technical experts from 22 countries, this tool provides a framework of standards for programs, as well as tips and examples from around the world.
  • Youth Peer Education Toolkit: Theatre-Based Techniques for Peer Youth Education: A training manual
    This training manual provides an overview of using theatre in health education. It contains four peer theatre training workshops, a series of theatre games and exercises that can be used in trainings, and information on developing and building a peer theatre program. A collaboration between the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and Family Health International, this tool was produced for the Youth Peer Education Network (Y-PEER), a project coordinated by UNFPA.

    The ENWHP promotes good practice in workplace health promotion and advocates the adoption of such practice in all European workplaces.
  • Health Promotion Research Internet Network
    This site, compiled by WHO Collaborating Centre on Supportive Environments for Health at the Department of Public Health Sciences, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden provides links to health promotion research centres, schools of public health and other internet resources of interest to health promotion and public health practitioners.
