Independent Studies
The purpose of pursuing an Independent Study is to learn about a particular area or course matter which is of special interest to you but is not offered in the formal program.
Points to note:
1. The course load should be commensurate with that of an elective course. i.e. 2, 3, 4, 6 or 8 units of credit.
2. You may achieve a total of 16 units of credit through independent studies.
3. A supervisor with whom you must regularly correspond for a certain period of time on a weekly/fortnightly basis must be appointed. It is up to you to initiate action in this regard, by negotiating with one of the academic staff of the School.
4. You will need to complete an "Application to undertake an Independent Study" form and have it approved by your supervisor before you can be enrolled in the independent study. The proposal should include details of topic, methods, assessment, duration (S1 or S2) and credit points to be achieved.
5. You should negotiate with your supervisor and agree in advance on the number of units of credit to be achieved and how you will be assessed.
6. There is provision for the number of units of credit to be decreased if the work is not considered to warrant those allotted.
7. How to enrol in an independent study (see enrolment procedures point 15).
