The UNSW academic year is divided into three semesters - Summer Term (8 teaching weeks), Semester 1 (12 within 13 teaching weeks + 1 week residential week + 3 weeks examination period) and Semester 2 - T2 (12 within 13 teaching weeks + 1 week residential week + 3 weeks examination period). Each Semester is divided into two teaching periods although most postgraduate courses offered by the School run for the whole semester. There are short mid-semester breaks of approximately one week between each teaching period and a slightly longer break in the middle of the Summer Term over the Christmas and New Year period. There is a mid-year break of approximately 4 weeks in June/July.

If you are enrolled in external courses please check the timetable carefully as you may need to attend compulsory workshops at the residential week on-campus for some of your courses. These are usually held one week before the commencement of the academic term. During the workshops you will complete preliminary assignment reading and activities.

You should make sure you have a firm understanding with your employer that you will need time off to attend the relevant on-campus schools. Failure to attend may result in you failing the year. If circumstances such as illness or misadventure prevent you from attending, the reasons must be adequately documented and sent to the Course Convenor.
