PhD and postgraduate study opportunities in infectious diseases
Posted: 2nd May 2008
At UNSW SPHCM, we have a large critical mass of multidisciplinary expertise in epidemiology, mathematical modelling, health economic modelling, special risk populations, social research and clinical research in infectious diseases. Few groups have the necessary training to bridge these diverse areas and bring them together in truly multidisciplinary research. For example, our clinical trials have within them sub-studies that involve mathematical modelling and health economic evaluation. This allows the maximum value to be gained from our research. The multidisciplinary nature of our research also facilitates the translation of research outcomes into policy and practice. Please contact Raina MacIntyre (R.MacIntyre@unsw.edu.au) for more details of PhD opportunities.

Investigating psychosocial and mental health policy and services in countries emerging from conflict and natural disaster
The School of Public Health & Community Medicine and the School of Psychiatry are investigating psychosocial and mental health service delivery and policy formulation and implementation in conflict- and disaster-affected countries of the Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, and East Timor. The project is supported by the Australian Research Council and the Chief Investigators are Professor Anthony Zwi, Professor Derrick Silove, Professor Jan Ritchie and Ms Anne Bunde-Birouste.
| The research will identify how international guidelines, standards and recommendations, national policies and plans of action are implemented at service and community levels, and the extent to which they respond to local need across the three countries under investigation. In addition, the research will identify which models and approaches are responsive to culture, gender, conflict and human rights. A 2-page summary of the ARC-funded project is available for download |

Potential Research Topic:
A significant area emerging from the research relates to the introduction and diffusion of the terms ‘mental health’ and ‘psychosocial’ in the international health development and humanitarian aid literature. Using citation-network path analysis of the literature there is the potential to generate a genealogy of the concepts of 'mental health' and 'psychosocial', based on the technique applied to the investigation of a genealogy of the concept of ‘social capital’ in public health (
