Research Degrees - Application Procedures
Application for Admission
Step 1: Plan your research proposal
The first step for you is to start thinking about your research topic and prepare a research proposal. The information on the following webpages should assist you with preparing your proposal:
1.
Our research areas
2.
Preparing a research proposal
Step 2: Contact the Research Student Support Officer at the School
Applicants for research degrees are required to contact Kate Crosbie via
resdegree-sphcm@unsw.edu.au, to discuss
selection criteria and to obtain an information pack prior to submitting an application.
Step 3: Submit your application to UNSW
IMPORTANT: Because the School requires a more detailed application than the Graduate Research School (GRS) to assess whether your proposal is feasible, you will need to submit TWO (2) separate applications:
1. SPHCM Application: this should include all of the requested documents in the Prospective Postgraduate Research Student Information package (which will be sent to you once you have contacted Kate Crosbie, as outlined above). Please ensure that you email this application to the Research Student Support Officer via resdegree-sphcm@unsw.edu.au
2. GRS Application: you will need to complete the Research Application Forms and attach your research proposal and requested documents. The application forms are available from the School of Public Health and Community Medicine, from the Postgraduate Section of UNSW, or can be downloaded from the school website. Completed application forms should be returned to:
We recommend that you submit the 2 applications at the same time to minimise processing time.
UNSW Research Application Procedures are listed on the UNSW website to assist you with planning your study and provide important instructions and information about applying for admission into a research degree at UNSW.
Attachments to Applications
The following information should be attached to your application:
- A research proposal that includes the required information as indicated in the School guidelines for preparation of research proposals.
- Your curriculum vitae outlining your work and research experience.
- Evidence from your proposed supervisor indicating that they are willing to act as your supervisor (email is acceptable); you will also need evidence from your proposed co-supervisor (however this can be submitted later during the application process if necessary)
- Evidence of funding/scholarship for your fieldwork (unless you have a supervisor in mind who already has funding)
- Originals or certified copies of your academic record and proof of completion of previous degrees.
- International students should show evidence of English proficiency (see section on English Requirements for further details).
- Evidence of Australian citizenship/permanent residency if you wish to apply as a local applicant.
Closing Dates for Applications
Applications for Postgraduate Research Degrees at the School of Public Health and Community Medicine can be submitted throughout the year. However there are deadlines which will determine whether you are eligible to apply for entry into Semester 1 or Semester 2. The university deadline for commencement can be found at
Graduate Research School - how to apply. Please note that applications take time to process. If you are also applying for a scholarship with UNSW, you will need to submit your application to the School several weeks in advance of the scholarship deadline.
Selection for Admission
Selection for admission to all Graduate Programs is based on the information supplied in your application. Applications are then sent for approval to the Higher Degree Committee which meets several times throughout the year.
All applications will be acknowledged and assessed for eligibility. Successful applicants will be sent an offer of admission with details of acceptance and enrolment procedures. Once the acceptance (and deposit for international students) is received, a confirmation of offer will be mailed to the applicant. In certain cases, specific security, health and financial documents must also be completed.
Information for International Students
The UNSW International website includes useful information for international students so you may like to take a look. The website also contains important information about living expenses in Sydney with details on accommodation and living expenses in the areas around the University.
Scholarships
Scholarship information can be obtained from the UNSW Scholarships Website. The two main scholarships for international students are the Australian Development Scheme and the International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS). Our School does not offer scholarships or support the cost of fieldwork. Scholarships are offered and organised through the University's Scholarship Unit.
