Staff Awards

Congratulations to the following staff from the School of Public Health and Community Medicine who have received awards for their achievements:

2008

Dr Chinthaka Balasooriya

Dr Balyasooriya received an Award for Teaching Excellence which is awarded to a person renowned for excellence in teaching and who has made a broad and deep contribution to enhancing the quality of learning and teaching. The Faculty of Medicine Learning and Teachig awards are based on the Australian Learning and Teaching Council Awards for University Teaching and were presented at a ceremony on 3 December 2008

Dr Ingrid van Beek

Dr Ingrid van Beek has received two significant awards this year. In June she was inducted on to the National Drug and Alcohol Honour Roll and in July she won the NSW Public Health Impact Award.

The Honour Roll was established in 2006 by four collaborating organisations (Ted Noffs Foundation, Australian Drug Foundation, Alcohol and Other Drug Council of Australia and the Australian National Council on Drugs) to recognise people who have made a significant contribution to the drug and alcohol field over a considerable period.

The NSW Public Health Impact Award is given by the NSW Branch of the Public Health Association of Australia to those who have made a significant impact on important public health issues, for example, making a demonstrable improvement in population health, developing innovative solutions to problems and applying effective methods with a high degree of excellence.

Since 1989 Ingrid has been the Director of the Kirketon Road Centre, a primary health care facility in Kings Cross involved in the prevention, treatment and care for HIV and other transmissible infections among "at risk" young people, sex workers and injecting drug users.

In 2000, Ingrid was seconded to become the foundation Medical Director of the Sydney Medically Supervised Injecting Centre in Kings Cross. A particularly controversial public health initiative, the Centre was the first legally sanctioned injecting centre in the English-speaking world.
