Research Interests

My research, both quantitative and qualitative, centres on the analysis of social (especially sexual) practice, taking a social constructionist approach within a realist empirical framework. I do both representative-sample survey research and in-depth qualitative studies, with a special interest in the relation between social interaction and material context. Topics include STI prevention, contraception, condoms and condom use, prisons, and sexuality and sexual practice. I am keen to supervise postgraduate research and ILP projects on such topics as: o Sex and contraception o Lesbian and bisexual women’s health (survey data available) o Sexual health and attitudes of prisoners (data available) o The portrayal of sex offenders in the media o Conceptualisation of sexual disorders, problems and offences and the effectiveness of treatment o Material context and regulation of illicit activity (e.g. parks, train stations) o Lay concepts of disease transmission, especially in sex
