  • Application of the resazurin microtitre assay for detection of multidrug resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis in Algiers
This study assessed the performance of a rapid, low-cost, colorimetric method, the resazurin microtitre assay (REMA) plate method, for the detection of resistance to isoniazid and rifampicin in 136 clinical isolates of Mycobacterium tuberculosis from two hospitals in Algiers. MICs were determined and the results were compared with those obtained with the conventional proportion method on Löwenstein–Jensen medium. Excellent results were obtained for the REMA plate method, with a sensitivity of 100% for both isoniazid and rifampicin and a specificity of 98.3 and 99.2%, respectively. The REMA plate method appears to be a reliable method for the rapid determination of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis and is a good alternative for use in resource-limited countries such as Algeria. • Fluoride Contents in Groundwaters and the Main Consumed Foods (Dates and Tea) in Southern Algeria Region
In the South of Algeria, the dental fluorosis is a "silent" epidemic spreading within the populations. The present study was aimed to determine the fluoride content in the water, dates and the tea that are consumed. The results reveal that 35% of the water wells had excessive fluoride levels (> 1.5 mg L-1). They are the waters of the Eastern areas that present the highest contents. These are, therefore, the areas where dental decay is the most widespread pathology. Although the dates and the tea are considerable sources of fluoride, with a daily contribution of 10 and 20%, respectively, it is the water which contributes up to 70%. For these three sources, the daily intake of fluoride ingested by an adult exceeds the proposed safe threshold for fluoride intake of 0.05-0.07 mg F.kg.day-1 The defluoruration with hydrated lime shows that starting from one liter of water of 2.3 mg L-1 of fluoride; the content could be brought back to 1.2 mg L-1. Maximum efficiency for one liter of treated water is 1.1 mg of fluoride by using 200 mg of lime. [author abstract] [OnLine Journal of Earth Sciences, 1(2): 70-75, 2007]
  • Investigation about the bovine tuberculosis in two Algerian slaughterhouses
In Algeria, real situation of bovine tuberculosis is unknown. It is widely suspected at slaughterhouses but must be supplemented by laboratory tests. In this study, we report the results of a survey conducted during the period from August to November 2007. From a total of 7250 carcasses examined, 260 showed suspicious lesions of tuberculosis, representing a prevalence of 3.58%. The distribution of injuries shows frequently a violation of respiratory lymph nodes with a rate of 76.92%. Microscopic examination of 260 pieces analyzed showed positive samples in 28.85% of the cases. The isolation and identification of isolates have confirmed 134 positive cultures, at a rate of 51.54%. Among these, 86.57% are represented by Mycobacterium bovis stains and 13.43% by a non tuberculosis mycobacteria strain. Hence, although the eradication programme has been operational for several years, this disease still remains widely apparent among Algerian territories. • Plague Reappearance in Algeria after 50 Years, 2003
An outbreak of plague occurred in the region of Oran, Algeria, from June to July 2003. Algeria had not reported this disease for >50 years. Eighteen bubonic cases were identified, and Yersinia pestis was isolated from 6 patients. Except for the index case-patient, all patients recovered. Targeted chemoprophylaxis, sanitation, and vector control played a crucial role in controlling the outbreak. Epidemiologic and biomolecular findings strongly suggested the existence of a local animal reservoir during this period, but its origin (resurgence or re-importation) could not be determined. This sudden and unexpected reemergence of plague, close to an important commercial seaport, is a textbook illustration of a public health event of international importance. It also demonstrates that the danger of plague reoccurrence is not limited to the currently indexed natural foci. • Reemerging Threat of Epidemic Typhus in Algeria
We report a case of epidemic typhus in a patient from the Batna region of Algeria, who presented with generalized febrile exanthema. The clinical diagnosis was confirmed by serological cross-adsorption followed by Western blotting. Our report emphasizes the threat of epidemic typhus in the highlands of Algeria. • Sandfly Fever Sicilian Virus, Algeria
To determine whether sandfly fever Sicilian virus (SFSV) is present in Algeria, we tested sandflies for phlebovirus RNA. A sequence closely related to that of SFSV was detected in a Phlebotomus ariasi sandfly. Of 60 human serum samples, 3 contained immunoglobulin G against SFSV. These data suggest SFSV is present in Algeria. [author abstract] [Emerging Infectious Diseases, Vol. 14, No. 5, May 2008, pp.795-797]
  • Serotype Distribution and Antimicrobial Resistance of Streptococcus pneumoniae Isolated in Algiers, Algeria
There are few data on antibiotic resistance of Streptococcus pneumoniae in Algeria. Among 309 strains, 34.6% were penicillin G-nonsusceptible S. pneumoniae strains (25.2% were intermediate and 9.4% were resistant). Serotypes 1, 5, 14, and 6 were the most frequent in invasive child infections. A multicenter study to standardize the national guidelines is needed.
