Clinical Associate Dean - St George Clinical School

Michael Grimm

Professor Grimm was appointed Clinical Associate Dean at the St George Clinical School in October 2005. He graduated MB BS with Honours from the University of Sydney in 1983 before undertaking his internal medicine and gastroenterology training at Royal Prince Alfred and Canberra Hospitals. He became a PhD student at the John Curtin School of Medical Research, ANU, examining factors mediating inflammatory bowel disease, and was awarded the Gastroenterological Society of Australia’s Young Investigator Award, and the ANU’s Fenner Medal, as a result of his doctoral research.

He undertook post-doctoral studies on the control of white blood cell movement at the National Cancer Institute, NIH, in Frederick, Maryland, USA, where he was an initiator of studies exploring neuroimmunological interactions in cellular migration. These studies continued on his return to Australia, when he was appointed to a Senior Lecturer position in the St George Clinical School in 1998, and have been combined with his longstanding interest in the immunopathogenesis of intestinal inflammation. His research has received continuous peer-reviewed funding since 1991.

Professor Grimm has a durable interest in medical education and its research, with past projects on the transition between undergraduate medicine and internship as a Director of Clinical Training, his current leadership of phase 2 of Medicine 3802, and numerous other roles in undergraduate medicine at UNSW. He retains a significant face-to-face teaching responsibility at St George Clinical School.

Professor Grimm is Presiding Member of the Human Research Ethics Committee at UNSW. He has had a number of commitments to the Gastroenterological Society of Australia (GESA) including being an integral part of the curriculum development process for advanced trainees in Australian gastroenterology and a Councillor since 2003. He will be President of GESA from 2009.
