Professor Jeremy Wilson graduated in Medicine from the University of Sydney in 1974. He undertook his postgraduate training in Gastroenterology at Concord and Prince of Wales Hospitals, and in 1983 travelled to New York to undertake research as a Visiting Fellow at Mt Sinai School of Medicine. He was appointed as a Conjoint Senior Lecturer of School of Community Medicine at UNSW in 1986, and became an Associate Professor of Medicine in 1997. He was appointed as Professor of Medicine at Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital in 2001 and the Clinical Associate Dean of the South Western Sydney Clinical School in 2002. In 2005, he became Professor and Director of Medicine at Liverpool Hospital.

Professor Wilson is a renowned pancreatologist. In collaboration with the Pancreatic Research Group, he has been responsible for advancing knowledge related to the pathogenesis of alcoholic pancreatitis, pancreatic fibrosis and pancreatic cancer. The most notable recent achievement of the Pancreatic Research Group has been the isolation of pancreatic stellate cells, the principal effector cells for pancreatic fibrosis. Successful isolation of these cells has led to a detailed study of their biology and progress towards finding innovative therapies for pancreatic disease.

Professor Wilson also has a number of roles at the Sydney South West Area Health Service (SSWAHS) including Executive Clinical Director – Western Zone. In 2004, he led the development of ‘The Way Forward’, the strategic plan for the development of clinical services for the south west of Sydney. He is currently involved in a range of strategic projects for SSWAHS and NSW Health including the Model of Care Planning Group of SSWAHS (Chair), the NSW Health Care Advisory Council (Member) advising the Minister for Health, and the Acute Care Sub-Committee of NSW Health (Chair) which has responsibility for advising the Department on matters related to best practice and efficient care of acute medical patients in the NSW Health System.
