Research at UNSW Medicine


Funding outcomes


Members of the Faculty have done remarkably well in the recent round of NHMRC, ARC and Cancer Institute grants. Altogether the Faculty has increased the amount of funding from NHMRC and the amount received for individual grants has also increased significantly. As well as obtaining 21 project grants, the Faculty also obtained 5 ARC Discovery grants. Excellent results were also obtained from the NSW Cancer Institute grants in which $3.8M from a total of $10M funding available was received by researchers in UNSW. Professor Levon Khachigian was awarded an Australia Fellowship and 6 of our researchers were awarded continuing NHMRC Fellowships, 3 were awarded NHMRC CDA’s, 4 NHMRC Partnerships and 26 Goldstar Awards (21 NHMRC projects plus 5 ARC projects). The first round of Future Fellows was announced and the Faculty received 3 new Future Fellowships.

UNSW’s Faculty of Medicine increased its total funding from NHMRC projects by 26% from $20M in 2009 to $25M in 2010. The Faculty received UNSW’s two largest grants:
  • $2.1M was awarded to a team led by Dr Lynn Kemp (Centre for Primary Health Care and Equity), for “Closing the Gap: Early Childhood Sustained Home Visiting for families of Aboriginal infants in an urban community”;
  • $1.9M was awarded to a team from the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre, for “Impact of parental Alcohol, Tobacco and other substance use on infant development and family functioning”.
  • NHMRC Partnership Projects: A/Prof A Ritter, Prof M Harris, Prof G Dore, Prof S Lord - $4 million increase in research funding to the Faculty in 2009.

Fellowships

  • Future Fellowships: UNSW submitted 46 applications in 2009, 15 were successful, 3 in the Faculty of Medicine: Melissa Green, Vanessa Venture and David Wilson. This year it is hoped to put forward 5 applicants from the Faculty of Medicine.
  • UNSW was awarded 6 of the 75 new Research Fellowships nationally to commence in 2010.
  • UNSW was awarded $1.55M (7.5%) for 4 new Career Development Awards for funding to commence in 2010.

Enabling Grants

  • UNSW was awarded one Enabling Grant for Genetic Repositories Australia, to Professor Peter Schofield for a central national facility for establishing, distributing and maintaining the long-term secure storage of human genetic samples.

Lowy Cancer Research Centre

  • The Lowy Cancer Research Centre was opened on 28 May 2010 by the Prime Minister, the Hon Kevin Rudd MP. Professor Philip Hogg was appointed as the Inaugural Director of the Lowy Cancer Research Centre to develop the Centre’s identity and foster interactions with UNSW, industry and the community.

NSW Scientist of the Year

  • 2010 NSW Scientist of the Year in the Biomedical Sciences category – Professor Perminder Sachdev.

Programs of Study, Interests and Strengths


The Faculty of Medicine has a long history of excellence in biomedical as well as public health research. The diverse range of both stimulating and novel research programs available in this Faculty provides many opportunities for postgraduate study. Such programs are currently being conducted at the UNSW campus in Kensington as well as its Clinical Schools, Centres and Research Institutes.

Research Integrity


A Research Integrity Subcommittee was commissioned by the Faculty Standing Committee to develop a series of recommendations that would establish ways of dealing with grievances and research misconduct as well as more preventive measures to reduce the likelihood of such events.

Office of Medical Research

  • The Office of the Medical Research helps researchers and students with projects, funding and supervision of research in the Faculty and schools.
