Training Course Descriptions




OH&S Awareness for Staff and Students (2.5 hour course)

    2009
    (Dates: see Training Schedule above. Additional university-wide dates are available on the UNSW OH&S website)

    All staff and students have OH&S responsibilities. Come along to this introductory course to find out what they are. Note: this course is compulsory for ALL staff and students.

    At the end of this course participants will be able to:
    • state the responsibilities of the UNSW and its managers, staff, students, contractors and visitors,
    • identify hazards and risks associated with thier work activites and workplace,
    • report hazards accidents and work-related illness in accordance with UNSW requirements,
    • participate in OH&S consultation processes at UNSW,
    • notify Security promptly in event of emergency,
    • access additional OH&S resources when required.

Risk Assessment (2.5 hour course)

    Are you a student or a staff member working on a research project? Do you write research grant applications?
    Do you supervise students doing research projects, field placements or independent learning projects in medium or high risk environments? This course is for you.

    At the end of this course participants will be able to:
    • use the UNSW 10 step risk assessment and control process
    • identify hazards
    • assess and rate risks using the UNSW Risk Rating System
    • identify and implement risk controls
    • apply the Hierarchy of Risk Controls
    • access online resources
    • complete the UNSW Risk Assessment and Control Form

Manual Handling and Preventing Occupational OverUse (1.5 hour combined course)

    At the end of this course participants will be able to:

    Component 1: Preventing Occupational Overuse Syndrome:
    • Demonstrate correct workplace adjustments for working with computers
    • Adopt safe work practice and posture when working with computers
    • Recognise the early warning signs for occupational overuse injury and the need for early reporting

    Component 2: Manual Handling
    • Understand staff and managers responsibilities when manual handling tasks are required
    • Able to assess the risks of a manual handling task and risk factors
    • Knowledge of safe lifting principles
    • Understand benefits of stretching
    • List support and resources available
